ASTM B514 Inconel 800H N08800 Nickel Alloy Welded Pipe for Gas Processing


ASTM B514 is standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials, specifically addresses "welded nickel-iron-chromium alloy pipe," prescribing the product's chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensional tolerances, testing methods, and technical requirements. UNS N08800 alloy steel is more commonly known commercially as Incoloy 800.

Although strictly speaking, Incoloy 800 is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy with a nickel content of approximately 30-35% and an iron content of approximately 39%, its properties are closer to those of nickel-based alloys, and for this reason, it is often referred to as such. Welded pipe, unlike seamless pipe, is produced by cold-rolling flat sheets or coils and then welding the seams together. The welding method of choice is typically shielded inert gas welding, such as TIG.


ASTM B514 N08800 Quality Control and Testing Requirements

  • Chemical Composition Analysis: Verifies that the alloy composition meets the requirements of N08800.
  • Mechanical Property Testing: Such as tensile testing, verifies tensile strength, yield strength, etc.
  • Hydraulic Testing or Nondestructive Testing: Each pipe must undergo a hydrostatic test, or alternative nondestructive testing methods such as eddy current testing or radiographic testing, to verify its sealing and weld integrity.
  • Dimensional and Wall Thickness Inspection.
  • Weld Macrostructure Inspection: Checks the weld fusion and form quality.
  • Intergranular Corrosion Testing (if required): Evaluates the material's resistance to intergranular corrosion.
