Grade 316L is a low carbon version of Grade 316, which significantly improves solderability. These components, such as stainless steel 316L flanges, exhibit mechanical properties nearly equivalent to standard 316 grade stainless steel. Like most low carbon stainless steel alloys, grade 316L is less prone to intergranular corrosion. The absence of higher carbon content in the alloy of ASTM A182 F316L flanges prevents the formation of carbide precipitates on grain boundaries. However, manufacturers may need to stress relieve these parts. While they can be used in the as-welded condition, they are not annealed. UNS S31600 SS 316L flanges are often preferred in many applications as they facilitate cleaning, inspection, and modification processes. Industries, especially pharmaceuticals, that require hygienic alloys for manufacturing products choose to use ASTM A182 F316L stainless steel pipe flanges.
Grade 316L is considered hygienic as it is non-toxic and has no significant impact on substrates used in pharmaceutical production. The pharmaceutical industry often deals with active ingredients and acidic or basic compounds, but ASME B16.5 Sa 182 F316L slip flanges generally do not react with these raw materials. As a result, the pharmaceutical industry is a major user of these components.
