316 is more resistant to atmospheric and other mild environments than 304. It is resistant to dilute sulfuric acid solutions (i.e. 1-5%) up to 120°F.
But in some oxidizing acids, 316 is not as resistant as 304. 316 is susceptible to carbide precipitation when exposed to temperatures in the
800° - 1500°F temperature range, and therefore susceptible to intergranular corrosion in the as-welded condition. Post-weld annealing will restore
corrosion resistance. 316L has the same composition as 316 except that the carbon content is kept below 0.03%. As expected, its general corrosion
resistance and other properties are very similar to Type 316. However, it does provide resistance to intergranular corrosion in the as-welded condition or
when exposed for short periods of time in the temperature range of 800° - 1500°F. When carbide precipitation ranges are unavoidable and post-weld
annealing is not feasible, 316L is recommended. However, prolonged exposure in this range may make the material brittle and make it susceptible to
intergranular attack. The maximum temperature for scaling resistance is approximately 1650°F in continuous use and 1500°F in intermittent use.
May be susceptible to chloride stress corrosion cracking. Non-hardenable; non-magnetic in the annealed state, slightly magnetic when cold-worked.
Improves corrosion resistance to chlorides.
