Why 347h SS is used for Chemical Processing?
Grade 347 is a special austenitic stainless steel that can be repeatedly and intermittently exposed to temperatures above 800 degrees Celsius. They are a modification of 304 stainless steel. They are similar to grade 321 in some of their mechanical properties, but differ in their composition by the presence of niobium. This material is resistant to most corrosive media at medium to high temperatures.
This is an important aspect required for chemical processing. The material has a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 515 MPa, which enables it to withstand high pressures at temperatures above 850 degrees Celsius. Pipes and components also have good elongation and high hardness. 304 material is subject to intergranular corrosion at temperatures above 850 degrees Fahrenheit, whereas 347H has a high carbon content and heat resistance, so it can work well in this temperature range.
The combination of pressure control, strength, hardness, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance makes it suitable for chemical processing. These properties also allow the material to be used in other highly corrosive, high heat applications such as boiler tubes and casings, radiant superheaters, heat exchanger tubes, oil and gas refineries, and aircraft exhaust stacks.
